Can We Really Blame Lack of Prayer in Schools?

Thought For The Week:  You must remember, the answers to your prayers may not come with a bow with a note attached.

People are still quick to blame the lack of prayer in schools as the reason for all the danger our kids are in today while trying to get an education, but it has nothing to do with it.  Prayer does not start in the school…it starts at home.

I can tell you growing up, when we did have prayer in the schools, it did not stop anything.  Kids were still being bullied, fights still broke out (some with weapons), kids still got into trouble for foolishness and police were still getting called to the schools.  So, what really has changed from then until now…parenting.

I graduated from high school in 1992.  Back then, teen pregnancy was getting a good start.  The problem was it kept going.  You had babies having babies and they didn’t have time to grow up themselves yet.  Some didn’t have the guidance, during this much needed time, to nurture them on how to raise a child so they did what they could do with what they had available.

Fast forward, we have generations now that are friends “with” their kids than parents “of ” their kids.  Anything wrong with this?  No, as long as you are the parent first and you “help” them to remember that when they forget (which they do from time to time) who is the parent and who is the child, there’s nothing wrong with this way.  What happens is parents become friends and try to hang out with their children instead of leading their children and the respect for their parents starts to fade.  It never fails, parents are their friends for so long that when they try to parent, it’s too late, all respect for you is gone because you let them get away with stuff for far too long, they don’t see you as the parent anymore but a rowdy.

When it was first said about them taking prayer out of schools, my question is where was all this outrage when they took it to the courts in the first place?  All we had to do was show up, but we didn’t and look what happened?  Still prayer starts at home, but so does parenting.  If you don’t have control of your child at home, what do you think they are going to do when they go to school?  It is not the school’s job to discipline our children.  They should go to school like they got some sense, sit down, shut up and learn.  Having prayer in schools means nothing if the souls walking through the doors don’t have goodness of God in them.  Prayer is just a word, it’s the action that we need to work on with our children, the staff, the world.

We need to remember the bible is the “only” book that the same scripture will mean something different to you every day you read it. God is awesome.  He moves in us every day, now it is our turn to move back into the world and reclaim it for Him once again.  We can’t expect Him to fix this mess that we let happened…can we?
