Since day one of my ministry, when it came to the month of February, I always wanted my students to learn “Little Known Black History Facts”. I was tired of the schools teaching the same things about the same people, there is nothing wrong with that, but those same people did much more than what they were telling our babies. There were also people who came way before them and those who blazed new trails after them.
In my ministry, we learned what “ancestor” means and what it really means to be an African-American. The generations after us will be the ones to correct all the wrong that happened before them. This generation will be the “calmer” generation as well. They will get things done on a more peace-like level than those before them. Why? Because they will not let every little thing send them over the edge. They understand the anger and frustration, but they also understand the mistakes that are made when people are arguing, fighting and yelling at each other. They will be the ones to get things done with peace, understanding and without the “don’t try me” attitude doing it while being respectful and understanding of what needs to be done and how it can be done.
We also learned about we are in the bible and not just as slaves. I told them of the bible movies , back in the day about us, and how we were played by others to look like us. We learned about: Nimrod, Hatshepsut, Zipporah, Hagar, Queen of Sheeba, Phinehas and Simon of Cyrene (he helped carry the cross with Jesus to his crucifixion – you didn’t know that did you???)
I love the sparkle in their eyes when they learn how much we are a part of American history, and culture, and its growth. The looks on their faces when they learn the things they use, and see, every day was created/invented by US!! Sadly, just like back then, we still don’t get the credit and/or recognition for what we contributed to society. Lucky for us, this younger generation will change all that and teach it to the generations that will come after them.
