Today we talk about the dress code and dressing appropriately. This is another topic the youth wanted to discuss, about how others are dressing in relation to the school dress code for girls against what is for boys.
One student said, “I think everyone has their own opinions about it. The school usually sends some type of email, paper or they put it in the handbook that’s given out and has to be signed, at the beginning of the year. I feel like in some cases the dress codes are very misogynistic (strongly prejudiced against women). For example, girls not being able to wear leggings or tank tops because it distracts the boys? What does our clothing have to do with their education? Boy’s sagging doesn’t really harm anyone, it’s just no reason to do it.”
Sad to say, I see their point. School, before the dress code, had everybody wearing any and everything to school. Tops so tight you read their bra size through their shirt. Pants so tight you could tell if they were wearing undies that day or not (& that’s both girls and boys). Skirts so short they couldn’t take a step without pulling down the skirt so something could be left to the imagination.
The boys? Pants so low, you could see their draws and tell if they were clean or not (some of the girls did this too). Shirts with questionable suggestions, profanity or they were just plain offensive. Did you see the difference? Girls had more issues with the way they dressed than the boys? Why? Girls have a lot more to cover than boys do and sadly many have abused that freedom and that is why we are at the need for a school dress code today.
Now did implementing a dress code that change anything, nope? Because they still had to add to the school dress code of not having clothes too tight or revealing (both girls and boys) and pants cannot be sagging below their butts (both girls and boys). So, another student said. “I honestly feel like dress appropriation is really based on everybody’s opinion. Everybody has their own style and wears what they feel most comfortable in in their own skin so I don’t really know. Obviously, people should just make sure they are covered.”
They are so correct, these days it’s all about expressing oneself through the way, and how, they dress. I still see students with clothes too tight or too loose when it comes to the school dress code. As the student said.” … Everybody has their own style and wears what they feel most comfortable in their own skin…”. This means even though there is a dress code, they are still manipulating it to fit their own style that makes them feel comfortable.
What it comes down to it is the student feeling comfortable, but still being respectful to not only the ones around them but being respectful to themselves as well. How they wear their clothes may send the wrong message to the wrong people. We need to communicate with them on their feelings, likes, dislikes and come to an understanding on why things are the way are and how it could be changed to benefit all the parties involved.
